FRIENDS OF FRANK BLACK MIDDLE SCHOOL
HISD Board Meeting
In an overwhelming show of community support, more 120 people attended the May 12 HISD Board meeting to ask for a Vanguard designation for Frank Black Middle School. That incredible level of participation -- merely in support of a school, as opposed to protesting a proposal on the agenda -- is truly historic. Most participants stayed for many hours of the marathon meeting. Over half of the supporters made it to the end of the meeting when four Friends of Frank Black presented to the Board beginning at 10:45 p.m. The Board and staff members were obviously impressed. The next steps in the Vanguard designation process will be a forthcoming proposal by the HISD staff to the Board, followed by a vote on the designation. Thanks to your support, those steps are anticipated later this year. The incredibly positive impression and exceptional sense of community created at the May 12 meeting will endure for years to come. Your active and amazing support of the FBMS renaissance is sincerely appreciated. Many thanks to the dozens and dozens of people who attended, for whatever length your schedule allowed, and thanks also to everyone -- even those who were unable to be there -- for doing such an effective job in spreading the word and motivating people to attend.

Dance Program Support
The FBMS dance program is staging its Spring Showcase on Thursday, May 26 at 6 p.m. in the school's performance theater. The students and the program director, Ms. Nesby, have been raising money for months with car washes, ice cream sales and soliciting community donations. It's an outstanding dance program featuring a wide range of dance styles with an excellent teacher and dedicated kids. $27 buys a new pair of tap shoes since the program's current set are all tapped out.
