Montessori News!

written by Dr. Catharine Perry
Special Projects Coordinator and Interventionist at Garden Oaks

Dr. Grier, the new Superintendent of the Houston Independent School District, graced the home of Malek and Victoria Muraywed, to speak to a gathered crowd of 80 parents and educators about the future of Montessori education within the public school system. Currently there are four schools with HISD that offer Montessori classes for kids, ranging from 3 years to 6th grade. Our local Garden Oaks Elementary is one of them.

To the delight of the group, Dr. Grier expressed enthusiasm for the marriage of Montessori and the public schools. The most applause came when a parent requested a junior and senior high school that continues their children’s education within the Montessori method, a suggestion which Dr. Grier promised to look into. The audience seemed very appreciative of hearing, and being heard by, our new Superintendent, and he acquitted himself as an intelligent and thoughtful new addition to the educational community in Houston.
